NYC: Fifth Foreign Office Receives Powder-Filled Letter In 24hrs

ywbn14.gifThe NYPD is now looking into two more incidents of foreign consulates or missions receiving powder-filled envelopes in New York, CBS 2 is reporting. On Tuesday, the German Consulate and the United Kingdom Mission to the United Nations were the latest recipients of the suspicious packages. Similar envelopes were sent to three other foreign officers yesterday afternoon.

When officials from the FDNY’s hazardous materials unit arrived to three foreign consulates late yesterday afternoon, there was clearly a bad sign that something was wrong. But when news spread that the response involved powder-filled white envelopes, delivered to each of the midtown locations, it served as a painful reminder of 2001’s fatal anthrax attack.

Police officials said initial field tests conducted on the white powder suggest the mailings were a hoax, but hazmat teams wouldn’t take a chance. They decontaminated 33 people who work at the French mission, Uzbekistan consulate, and Austrian consulate, which all received envelopes postmarked from Dallas.

Fortunately, no one was injured, and the search continues for who sent the powder filled envelopes.

The FBI is now assisting the NYPD, which is leading the investigation.
