NYPD Says Bronx Gun Buyback Sets Record

New York City police say the 1,186 guns recovered at a one-day Bronx gun buyback event has set a new city record.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says it’s the most guns collected in a single day since the city’s money-for-weapons program started in 2008.

Since then, the program has recovered more than 5,700 guns brought to churches throughout the city and has distributed more than $1 million.

Participants received a $200 prepaid bank card for each weapon surrendered at four Bronx churches last Saturday, no questions asked.

Funding was provided by the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office, the Bronx Borough President’s Office and the NYPD.

  1. Here in Arizona we would’ve paid $250 each, depending on condition of course, no questions asked. Next time, defenseless New Yorkers, shop around for the best deal.

  2. These things don’t work anyway. The real criminals aren’t selling their guns for $200 or $250 because they are NOT selling them. If you don’t believe it read Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. They explain it all much better than I can here in my limited space.
