Following Tragic Death Of Moshe Englender, Cuomo Signs Truck Mirror Bill Into Law

Large trucks are now required to have special mirrors installed so drivers can more easily spot pedestrians.

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law Monday requiring the convex “crossover” mirrors.

“Convex mirrors are an effective tool to protect pedestrians from accidents caused by blind spots,” Cuomo said. “This law will allow truck operators to see pedestrians or objects directly in front of them and will offer new safety protections to many New Yorkers. I thank Senator Golden and Assemblywoman Millman for their efforts in seeing this bill passed.”

Momentum for the bill grew in May after a four-year-old Williamsburg boy was hit and killed while riding his tricycle in Brooklyn.

Moshe Englender A”H was among the city’s latest tragic victims, when the driver apparently could not see the child in front of the truck.

The mirrors cost a few hundred dollars each. They eliminate blind spots and help drivers see in front of their trucks.

The new law is designed to eliminate blind spots directly in front of large vehicles. Under the law, all large trucks registered in New York state with a maximum gross weight of 26,000 pounds are required to be equipped with a convex mirror on the front of the vehicle when driving in New York City.

  1. Maybe we should also require tall polls with flags (orange or yellow triangular banners) be attached to the back wheels or seats of tricycles, small bicycles, etc. This way even trucks not registered in NY (as many moving trucks and trucks transporting goods across state lined are) would also see what is in front of their trucks.

  2. How about mirrors for the back of minivans, buses, and trucks?

If a toddler is in the rear of a minivan which is a very popular type of vehicle in our communities, the driver can’t see him when he backs up.

  3. Basically, there is a camera on the back of your car. When you go into reverse, it either uses a gps screen or part of your rear view mirror to show you what the camera sees. You get a perfect view all the way to the floor of what is behind your car.
