Barak Signals Support For Expanding Shavei Chevron Yeshiva

Defense Minister Ehud Barak is signaling that he approves reactivating the permit towards expanding the Shavei Chevron Yeshiva, located in the Beit Romano area of the city, on King David Street.

According to a HaMevaser report, the permit was already approved in the past but the actual expansion was not permitted. Now, Barak promised the request will move ahead, making the rounds to the various ‘professional committees’ for approval. A main purpose for the project is to construct a suitable kindergarten for the growing population.

The yeshiva was established in 5742, after the murder of six yeshiva bochrim in Beit Hadassah in a Friday night attack.

Rabbi Avinoam Horowitz, then a young student, organized a number of talmidim from Merkaz HaRav in Yerushalayim and Shavei Chevron was launched with permission from then Prime Minister Menachem Begin. Ten students formed the nucleus of the yeshiva, headed by Rabbi Moshe Bleicher. One of the founders was Asher Aaron Gross HY”D, who was murdered in another attack later in the year. Today, the there are 250 talmidim and 70 avreichim.

Murdered in the attack that prompted the launching of the yeshiva were; Tzvi Glatt, Gershon Klein, Yaakov Zimmerman, Haran Kratzhammer, Eli HaZe’ev and Shmuel Mermelstein HY”D.
