Secret Service Nabs Man Who Jumped White House Fence

A man jumped the north fence of the White House Tuesday evening, prompting an evacuation of Pennsylvania Avenue and Lafayette Park.

Secret Service spokesman Max Milien said around 6:30 p.m. the man scaled the fence carrying a backpack but when he dropped to the ground, left the pack and made a “full sprint” toward the White House.

He was chased down by officers and cooperated with them as he was escorted off the property and taken into custody by Metropolitan Police Department officers.

Mr. Milien said the backpack was searched and nothing of interest was recovered. He was taken to the department’s First District Station at 101 M St. Southwest and charged with unlawful entry.

The president and first lady were not in the residence.
