New JFK Flight Path Brings Unbearable Noise, L.I. Residents Say

Dozens of residents from various towns on Long Island went face-to-face with aviation officials at a community meeting in Lawrence Monday to complain about a new Kennedy Airport flight path that has planes going over their homes.

For residents in a part of Long Island who have never been exposed to plane traffic, the noise is unbearable.

State Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt said complaints to his office started flooding in when Runway 22L opened, exposing some new towns to air traffic.

Representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration heard the concerns, and on Oct. 31 started a pilot program on the overnight shift to keep planes at a higher altitude until they’re close to landing.

But residents claim the noise isn’t getting better.

FAA officials said pilots are given specific landing instructions based on runway availability and weather conditions. And with Kennedy handling 1,200 flights a day, that leaves little room for negotiation.

The FAA said it will look at the results of its overnight pilot program, and see if any of those methods can be applied during the day.

  1. It’s so funny that people in Lawrence are complaining. I’ve been living this way for over 20 years right near Lawrence. It took probably all of 2 months to get used to the noise and now I don’t even hear it anymore. It’s the same thing as the people in Lawrence living right next to the LIRR. They don’t complain about the train noise because they’re used to it.
Besides, the plain flight pattern changes every couple of months so while it may be bothersome now, in a couple of months it’ll change again and it won’t be then.

  2. I live a few hundred feet from NJT tracks as well as on the landing pattern for EWR and all it is, is background noise. People in BP also have the noise. Besides airplanes are far quieter now than they were 15 or 20 years ago.

  3. when i moved next 2 lawrence i ask my freind how long it take 2 get used 2 the noise he answered 1 month, so 4 my firs month i rented in BP……….
