Settlement Council Leader Ignores Shabbos

Settlement Council leader Danny Dayan on Shabbos Parshas Mishpotim ignored Shabbos, opting to be part of a cultural event held in Beersheva.

Dayan used the forum to address the so-called ‘price tag attacks’, calling them “the greatest strategic threat to settlement.” He added that if the identity of those involved becomes known to him, he will turn that person in to authorities.

Dayan called on Israel Police and the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) to do all they can to apprehend those responsible, to bring them to justice. He fears for as long as those responsible remain free, their action serve to support conspiracy theories against the residents of yishuvim, feeding the opponents of settlements.

When asked to comment on the chilul Shabbos, council officials declined to comment. Unfortunately, it is not the first time that settlement officials acting in an official capacity ignored the sanctity of the day for one reason or another not related to security or justifiable chilul Shabbos.

  1. Perhaps Mr. Dayan is not an observer of Halachah and never observed the sanctity of the Shabbos. There are many unanswered questions. Perhaps he, like many other settlers, is not religious. We should try to help him and the others to return to the Torah.

  2. Is this story really so earth-shatteringly newsworthy that we needed to hear it? What about loshon hara? There’s a very fine line between what’s mutar and what’s assur.
DMMD: Kudos for being dan l’kaf zechus.

  3. The article is not clear why there was an expectation he would be shomer shabbos. Was this the first time something like this had occurred? Not all the settlers are frum, so it could be he simply is doing what he usually does. The more important point in the article, however, is seemingly overlooked. His statement that those who engage in violence against the Palestinians are really hurting the cause of the West Bank settlers and that he and most other responsible leaders strongly condemn such vigilante actions.

  4. Is he religious? There is nothing in his online biographies to suggest he is anything but a secular Israeli, in which case, what is the hiddush about him not keeping Shabbos? A frei Yid not keeping Shabbos is NOT news.

Its not a “fine line” between what is mutar and assur. Clearly what he was mechallel shabbos and what he did was assur, but he never claimed to be a shomer torah umitzvos so whats the point.
