Fidler Develops Some Momentum in Early Absentee Counting

The Politicker reports the following:

Maybe Lew Fidler was right to be optimistic about the absentee vote counting today in the hotly contested, and very close, special election for the State Senate in Brooklyn.

With 163 of the 757 absentee ballots counted, Mr. Storobin’s 119 vote lead from last week has dropped to 62, although, of course, the count is subject to significant fluctuations as pockets of support from both candidates are tallied.

In addition, hundreds more currently invalid absentee ballots can be contested by the two campaigns, possibly placing even more votes in play. Needless to say, even though the last vote was cast Tuesday night last week, this race is far from over.

  1. If they keep fighting long enough, no one will become senator before time runs out, and the whole district is deleted.

  2. With 757 votes – It is close to impossible to make up + 120 votes when over 20,k votes ended 50-50 – it will be lemayla min hateva

  3. Even if Fiddler wins, the district goes away, and Fiddler’s credentials are somewhat impaired by having basically tied in a safe Democratic district.

By having tied in a situation where that was amazing, Storobin has real credentials to run as a Republican.

And Brooklyn, at least the parts with large Jewish populations (either frum or Russian, or both) are finally “in play”

  4. How can one have momentum in a process that is already over? The votes have all been cast, all that is left to be done is the counting. So the whole concept of momentum is not shayach here. The candidates are not moving at all, so it’s not possible to pick up or lose momentum; they’re standing still at the finish line and waiting for the result.

  5. As far as i hear, they are counting these ballots in order of AD. This means that Lew would get a early bump as he covers the 41st AD, which is the in the beginning of the count, within his councilmanic district. This is where he received many votes in the election day tabulations as well. When the counts start for the districts in midwood, boor park and the Russian neighborhoods, these numbers will almost certainly change.
