Shavuos Assault Results in Increasing Concern for Welfare of Our Children

The question is asked in many communities and parents today simply wish to understand if there are more assaults against children R”L or are the once silenced incidents being reported more often today. Whatever the case, any assault against a child is cause for immediate concern and appropriate action.

This latest case addresses an incident that occurred on Shavuos at about 07:20 when a mother and her 7-year-old daughter were returning from shachris at the Kosel. As is often the case with small children, the girl walked a bit ahead of mom, disappearing into alleys from time-to-time as she explored and satisfied her curiosity. It appears that in one of these alleyways a male grabbed her and dragged her behind a building and assaulted her. Only a few minutes passed until mom arrived, but it appears at times this is sufficient for an assault to occur.

One of the neighbors in the area who was also returning from shachris saw the girl lying on the ground appearing confused and crying. “We tried talking to her but she was stuttering and speaking incoherently” Kikar Shabbat quotes the neighbor as saying.

At about this time mom arrived and discovered something had occurred, seeing her daughter on the ground, prompting her to simply release a shout, exhibiting her pain and shock.

Police were summoned and they began questioning the girl, who explained a man who looked chareidi dragged her into a parking lot and attacked her and fled. Police are hoping the area security cameras will provide a clue as to the identity of the attacker.

Immediately after yomtov they reported to police to view the camera footage and the girl was able to identify her attacker, a male described as being about 18 according to police, dressed in chareidi garb. He was seen following the girl and dragging her to the parking area.

Neighbors signal police do seem to have an idea regarding the attacker’s identity and they are hopeful that an arrest is forthcoming.

Neighbors add they have a photo of another chareidi appearing male who was also identified by children and they hope police will apprehend him as well.

Sure, it’s ‘NORMAL’ to let a 7-year old ‘DISAPPEAR’ at times. What incredible idiocy and irresponsibility! I would lock up the molesting animal in solitary for 6 months, and that’s on a first offense. And I would fine the family a hefty sum and remove the child from their care for a month, also for a first offense alone. Maybe then this garbage would begin to dissipate.

  2. #1, Yes, it is normal for kids to run ahead of their parents, or even to go out on their bikes all day and for parents not to be concerned that something will happen to them.
