Hurricane Sandy: Storm Prompts Flight Cancellations

United Airlines said it would begin canceling flights in and out of Newark Liberty International and other mid-Atlantic airports starting Sunday night, due to the weather.

The airline advised travelers to check united.com for specific cancellation information.

More than two thirds of all flights in and out of Newark Liberty are operated by United, which also flies out of John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs Newark, Kennedy and LaGuardia, advises airline passengers to check with their carrier before going to the airport, regardless of the airline. The agency urges would-be travelers not to go to the airport unless they are certain their flight will be departing.

The agency has secured loose materials and notified airport businesses to take similar precautions, at the three major airports and at its regional hubs Teterboro and Stewart.
