Motzei Shabbos News Roundup From Israel


Over the course of Shabbos in Israel, Fire Fighters and staff from Keren Kayemet L’Yisroel together with security forces in the Gaza periphery worked to put out 26 fires that were started by kite bombs and ballon bombs that were sent from the Gaza Strip into Israel. One balloon bomb was located over the Sha’ar Hanegev Kibbutz and was neutralized before it could explode. Police sappers neutralized another seven balloon bombs that landed but had not yet exploded in open areas around the region.

Israeli media outlets said that some 206 terrorists were injured in skirmishes along the Gaza border on Friday during violent protests that took place there. According to Palestinian media sources some 131 terrorists have been killed since the beginning of weekly protests on the Gaza border and another 14,811 have been injured.

In a separate incident, Border Police officers arrested an Arab who was caught approaching the Kiosk checkpoint in east Jerusalem. He was carrying a suspicious device and shouting Allah Akbar when he was told to stop his approach and stopped by police who followed protocol for stopping a suspicious individual including firing a volley of bullets at his legs. The suspect was mildly injured during the arrest. A spokesperson for the Border Police said that the incident was particularly suspicious as the person approached by foot to a checkpoint where only vehicles passed and was shouting Allah Akbar while carrying a suspicious package. The officers acted in accordance with the protocol to prevent the suspect from attacking them.

A 40-year-old man was seriously injured and two other people were moderately injured in a motor vehicle accident on Highway 40 near Yad Mordechai interchange after a car flipped over and fell off of the road on Shabbos.

A Muslim man was shot in a criminal attack that occurred on the highway between the Arab town of Umm al-Fahm and the Jewish town of Mei Ami on Shabbat Afternoon. United Hatzalah volunteers from its Arab division in Wadi Ara and Umm al-Fahm together with police, treated the man before paramedics pronounced his death at the scene. Police are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

An 80-year-old man was moderately injured after a fire broke out in an apartment building on Herzog Street in the city of Akko. Five crews of fire fighters battled the blaze. It is suspected that the fire was stated by arsonists. A full investigation is being conducted.

A fire broke out on HaHomah HaShlishit Street in Jerusalem on Friday night and a number of people suffered minor injuries and smoke inhalation. Fire Fighters utilized two cranes in order to contain and eventually put out the fire and evacuate the injured from the building.

Another fire broke out in the forests near the town of Nataf during Shabbos. Planes as well as four fire squadrons were utilized in controlling the blaze before it reached the township that is located in the Mateh Yehuda regional council.
