Williamsburg: Suspect Wanted In Mezuzah Torchings Has Extensive Criminal History

rubPolice are searching for a 35-year-old man in connection with the burnings of a dozen mezuzahs, Hebrew-inscribed parchments affixed to doorways of Jewish homes, in Brooklyn over the last several days.

Authorities say they used facial recognition to identify the suspect as Rubin Ublies. Police say he was spotted by surveillance cameras lighting a match in the Clymer Street building where the most recent mezuzah was vandalized Tuesday.

Police say Ublies has an extensive criminal history that includes dozens of arrests on robbery, drug, assault, weapons and other charges. In the most recent surveillance photos, he was seen wearing a black jacket with an “NY” emblem on the shoulder and ark pants. He’s about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs roughly 145 pounds, police said.

Anyone with information about Ublies or the arsons is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS (8477).

  1. The rabbi of kiryas yoel ny said this motzie shabos that the Jewish people of California stumbled on eating non kosher meat because in ny (excluding kj) Jews are eating chicken that have a problem of tzumas hagidin. According to the rabbi the reason of burning the mezuzas, could it maybe be because in kj they have a yeshiva educating Jewish children without mezuzas?

  2. Mayerfreund maybe you could be right. But we don’t know Hashem’s reasons. Maybe Hashem is telling not to just take our mezuzos for granted (or the mitzvah itself) and to learn the Halachos of mezuzah. This way we will have proper appreciation for the mitzvah.

  3. So according to the rabbi in KY the only hashgacha that is not allowing people to eat “tzumas hagidin” is in KY????? All others are simply pick and choose which mitzvos and aveiros they want to adhere to? Interesting but very understandable for the narrow-minded Satmarers.
