The Amar Bill, which was introduced in the hope of Rishon LTzion HaGaon HaRav Moshe Shlomo Amar Shlita serving a second term is not going to pass in time for this election for chief rabbis. The bill was to have been passed in the plenum on Wednesday, 4 Tammuz 5773, but this did not occur.
There isnt another opportunity to vote on the bill before Sunday, at which time the state has committed to the Supreme Court the election for the chief rabbis will officially be underway. As such, it will be too late to implement any new laws for the upcoming election.
According to Knesset legal advisor Eyal Yinon, it was already too late for the bill because in essence, the election began some time ago, as was reported by YWN-ISRAEL.
It now appears clear to all however that Rav Amar will not be a contender for the post of Sephardi Chief Rabbi in the upcoming election, at least under current realities, which in Israel are always subject to change.
