The Supreme Court on Wednesday, 24 Menachem Av 5773 rejected a petition filed by a number of organizations seeking to compel the immediate induction into the IDF of 608 chareidim. The inductees in question were instructed that they are not being drafted in the August 2013 draft as they were first told but they will be called in December 2013. This is the result of a decision by Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, who originally stated 500 inductees will be pushed off until November, changing it to December and increasing the number to 608.
Actually, not all of the inductees received the delay notices and some, those who reported for duty, were sent home as was reported by YWN-ISRAEL.
The court did decide to convene at a later date to monitor progress of the government and the passing of the new chareidi draft bill.

I believe these were people who were not adverse to going into the army. Allowing the Defense Minister discretion as to who gets conscripted could prevent a crisis as long as the Defense minister (a retired general) feels he can exempt anyone who would cause more trouble than its worth.
Remember the army has no manpower shortage (they are actually planning to “fire” soldiers) and the move to conscript hareidim is motivated by bigotry, and is in spite of, not because of, the needs of national defense.
