Shaked: Bayit Yehudi will Veto Civil Marriage

chupBayit Yehudi MK Ayelet Shaked reports the dati leumi party will not permit legislation to approve civil marriage to pass into law and it will use its veto power as a senior coalition member to prevent it.

Shaked’s statement follows an earlier declaration by a Yesh Atid MK, stating in the near future the party will move forward with its bill to permit a couple to marry outside Halachic framework that exists today.

MK Adi Koll used her Facebook page to display her marriage license from New York City Hall on her fourth wedding anniversary. She proudly explains the ceremony took all of 30 seconds and they were married by a city hall employee named Banca Martinez. “We did not meet with her ahead of time and most likely, I will never see her again. I have no problem with this” she adds.

Shaked added that the committee responsible for issues pertaining to religion and state includes a number of shomer Shabbos Jews, Deputy Minister of Religious Services Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan, Education Minister Rabbi Shai Piron, MK (The Movement) Elazar Stern and MK (Yisrael Beitenu) David Rotem and such a bill will not be approved.

Srugim asked Shaked what her party’s position is on such a bill, to which she responded “There are a number of versions, some which may be made to comply with Halacha. It is too early to know. We must study the bills.”

She adds that the party will absolutely veto a civil marriage bill and of this there is no doubt.

  1. In the run up to the elections, BY received heavy criticism, and subsequently had to deny the statements of Shaked herself, that the party would put forward exactly this type of bill.

Without commenting on whether this is a personal change of heart or whether she is merely following orders from the party, the change in her statements on the issue are certainly interesting.

  2. After all Bayit Yehudi have to do something for yiddishkeit. With their being so anti charedi and so committed to the rasha’s party they forgot what they stand for. But as with their past experience, they would not leave the coalition for this, though.

  3. #2 Nonsense. It’s the Chareidi parties that have sold Dati people and the rst of the country down the river, not the other way around. Oslo, Gush Katif, etc…..

  4. Beit Yehudi have consistently made promises and equally consistently not kept them. Every time their chief “Rabbi” Lapid demands something, they just buckle under as Mr Bennet orders them to. What a bunch of sad losers! They promised to stop the cuts to yeshivos time and time again – they didn’t even try! They promised to ensure that anybody that wishes to learn Torah will be able to without having to go to the army – look what is happening in this Shaked’s committee. Actually, it is the chiloni defense minister who is doing so much more for the chareidim and is having to fight against the BY anti-Torah members. How sad!!
When a member of BY promises something positive, I shudder as that means they will work for the exact opposite.
