Shas Moetzas Gedolei Yisrael Sets Priorities

2Shas’ Moetzas Gedolei Yisrael convened last week for its first meeting following the petira of Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L. The rabbonim began arriving shortly after 7 PM and after the meeting got underway, party leader Aryeh Deri provided the rabbonim with a picture of today’s realities vis-à-vis the party, the planned induction of chareidim and other pertinent issues. Deri also informed the rabbonim shlita that the chareidi parties consulted with prominent attorney Yaakov Weinrott and have decided to appeal the decision ordering new elections in Beit Shemesh.

The rabbonim were generous in their words of praise and support, standing firmly behind Beit Shemesh Mayor Moshe Abutbul in light of the decision to disqualify the elections.

The party MKs then joined and they listened to the rabbonim as the set the priority list regarding what issues are to be addressed first. Leading the list is the planned induction of bnei yeshivos into the IDF. Needless to say the rabbonim had harsh words for the current administration and its anti-religious policies.

It was reported that for reasons that are unknown, Eli Yishai left the meeting before the rabbonim shared what they had to say with the MKs.

  1. Bottom line: Even though most Shas supporters serve in the IDF, Shas is making opposition to conscription of yeshiva students its highest priority. Based on what R. Yosef said this is to be expected, but it isn’t what the religious zionists expected. Shas, Yahadut ha-Torah and the anti-zionist hareidim make a very significant block that appears to be united enough to serious thwart the zionists’ plans.
