Deri: No Compromise in Shas Schools

deriAmid recent reports that Shas leader Aryeh Deri signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education to include secular subjects in the Mayan Chinuch schools, the party leader reassures followers he hasn’t sold out chareidi chinuch.

The party-affiliated Yom L’Yom newspaper reports that Deri explains the deal to include secular subjects in the school system does not represent compromise or change and he remains committed to following in the path of Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L. Deri added the deal signed was approved by the Shas Moetzas Gedolei Yisrael and HaGaon HaRav Maya Shlita, who is the education networks mashgiach ruchani, and he did not sell out as his opponents accuse him of doing.

Deri is quoted explaining that as was the case in the past, school including the entire ministry curriculum will receive 100% funding while schools that only include a portion will receive 75% funding. He stresses that it is clear to all ministry officials that Mayan Chinuch will maintain exclusive oversight of the Torah curriculum and there will be absolutely not government involvement on any level.

  1. What possible reason would Shas have to oppose offering some core secular subjects (aka reading, writing and arithmetic) that would help their students get a job and enable them to function in the real world??

  2. #3 luckshun kugel – The fact that Deri is unethical does not mean that he’s wrong in this particular case. After all, even a broken clock is right twice a day…
