Vadim Rabinovich, President of the All-Ukrainian Jewish Congress and Co-Chairman of the European Jewish Parliament is running for the presidency of Ukraine in the elections scheduled for May 25.

Explaining the reasons for his decision to be a presidential candidate, he told journalists after submitting his candidacy to the Central Elections Committee: “In running for presidency I pursue several objectives. One of them, if not the primary, is to shatter a myth of anti-Semitism in Ukraine.’’

In a recent interview with European Jewish Press, Rabinovich called reports in the international media claiming that the Ukrainian protest movement has led to a surge in anti-Semitism ‘’lies and examples of incitement which do great damage to the reputation of the Jewish community in Ukraine.’’

‘’Ukraine’s Jewish community is not in any danger despite the momentous events taking place in the country,’’ he said.

Around 200,000 Jews live in the country.

‘’Once we head for Europe, I would like to show that our society offers equal opportunities for everyone,’’ Rabinovich also said about his candidacy, stressing that the country‘’needs union and I am the unifying candidate.’’

But he said however that he didn’t have “a manic lust for power but just a desire to help the country.’’

“I have got an effective economic programme how to dig the country out of a recession in a year,’’ said Rabinovich, a businessman, owner and co-founder of the Jewish News One tv channel.

In the current situation he finds himself to be the ‘’best unbiased candidate.’’

Two other prominent personalities applied for registration of candidates for the President of Ukraine to the Central Election Commission (CEC): the ex- Governor of the Kharkov region, Mikhail Dobkin, and one of the leaders of the Party of Regions, Sergey Tigipko.

Documents submitted by the candidates are processed in accordance with the law “On Elections of the President of Ukraine”. They are registered in the CEC and will be pending for two days. Then, if they are confirmed to be valid, the procedure of registration of candidates will start.

  1. How does the Jewish News One tv channel make money in a market of only 200,000 Jews? That’s almost as big a miracle as Chanukah.

As for the absence of anti-Semitism in Ukraine, I hope he is right.
