Principal in Betar Illit School in Hot Water Over ‘Bimbo’ Comment

classrThe principle of the הליכות ביתה girl’s school in Betar Illit is under fire in the secular media after getting into a verbal altercation with a student. According to the report, the principal commented on the lack of modesty of a student’s clothing. According to the report, the principal then began insulting the girl, eventually shouting bimbo (פרחה) at the student.

The student phoned home, reportedly somewhat hysterical. Some family members say she passed out at some point after becoming too emotional. A brother says the principal went ballistic on her because the top button of her blouse was open. Other comments attributed to the principal cannot be printed in this forum.

Officials in the Ministry of Education report learning of the incident on erev Shabbos 29 Sivan and the district supervisor has already visited the school and spoken with the principal. The daily Maariv quotes a ministry official saying that if the allegations against the principal are true, she will be dealt with using all means at the ministry’s disposal.

Magen David Adom is quoted confirming its dispatcher did receive a call for assistance at the school regarding a student passing out.

  1. The girl’s brother later approached the principle on the street and filmed their conversation. My impression from that discussion is that this lady is not fitting to be a principle or an educator at that.

This is a serious problem that the Chareidi society does not address properly. All too often schools here purposely hire staff who’s job it is to flush out unwanted girls. The problem is that these employees do not care at all what happens to those girls and later when these girls go off the derech they use that as a proof that they were right to kick them out and not once question themselves that perhaps these girls went off the derech because of them.

I once heard that one of the gedolim, perhaps Rav Shach, stated that if a girl comes out of Bais Yaakov frum it’s a miracle. That’s very sad!

  2. moderator: if you can explain why this article is not a blatant transgression of hilchos lashon hara
thanks(and if you cant please remove the article)

  3. Softwords: That was insightful.

The school staff, especially the principal, should not be getting into shouting matches with the kids. They are supposed to be the adults, the positive role models.

My experience with sending my kids to yeshiva is that the school staff are often hired for their Torah knowledge, which is good, but many are lacking in technical, interpersonal and administrative skills to be running a school. Many simply aren’t good with children. This seems like an example.

  4. Softwords (Although yours don’t sound so soft):
    1) Why does it sound to me as if you have removed the koach of bechirah from the picture entirely?
    2) HaRav HaGaon Rav Shach could never have said that. Even if statement is true, it would amount to lashon ha’ra on not only one entire school, but on all schools belonging to that ilk. Not possible. And the facts are not true. The vast majority of Beis Yaakov graduates not only remain frum, but grow in their emunah, bitachon, shmiras ha’mitzvos, ahavas HaShem, etc. evidenced at the continued increase of long term/full time learners, the opening of more and more post high-school seminaries, etc.
    3) Sounds to me as if you have complaints that should possibly be discussed with the one you have ta’anos on as well as with your Rav.

  5. A principal needs professional training in sensitivity, understanding and BALANCE. To abuse, yell, demean a student is not education it is part of MARTIAL ARTS.

I don’t believe Rav Shach ever said that!!! Either way there are many unqualified people working as teachers and principals and something must be done about it.

  7. Softwords: No no, if they go off the derech it is the parents fault. Nothing to do with the school making Yiddishkeit and Torah look bad. Remember, the school and Rebbi are always right over your child.

  8. Please let’s be careful not to post any postings that will create machlokes between people. Perhaps Hashem is looking down at us now – and hoping that after our tragedy we can keep our achdus intact. Please think before you post. And if you disagree with what someone else posted or you have an opinion to offer about the posting, please write in a respectful, mentchlich way. We cannot afford to lose the achdus that we gained. It will be a desecration to the memories of Eyal, Gilad and Naftali and to their families.
