Report: The US is Preventing an Investigation Against Israel in The Hague

obbiQuoting former US officials, the British Guardian reports America is applying pressure to prevent The International Criminal Court in The Hague from launching a criminal investigation against Israel for its actions in Gaza during Operation Protective edge.

The PA (Palestinian Authority) during Operation Protective Edge announced it was going to press its case against Israel in the international court. PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) announced on a number of occasions that Israel must be brought to justice for the “war crimes” committed against citizens of Gaza.

The daily Maariv adds that Western sources are also pressuring the PA to accept the Hague Convention, which would clear a path to charge Hamas leaders with war crimes in the future.

  1. Something does not add up. Either (i) this report incorrectly alleges that the US administration, headed by our Muslim socialist Israel-hating America-hating foreign-born president, is acting in support of Israel, or (ii) Obama-hating supporters of Israel are mistaken.

    Discuss.

  2. Lo Kashyo.

The US is not doing this for Israel’s sake. They are doing it for the sake of the Palestinians. If they were supporting Israel’s interests they would let the Palestinians recognize the legality of the ICC and sue Israel. That would open the door for groups like the one headed by Darshan-Leitner to sue the PA for everything they have forever, leaving them in a bottomless hole of bankruptcy. Obama, Kerry, or whomever are not interested in that. Thus, it is better to block the Palestinians now so that they can be propped up against Israel at a later date.

  3. #1 If you’re a “diplomat” you work slowly, you don’t press all the demands on your opponent at once…he may just bolt and never come back to the “negotiating” table.
#3’s answer may be correct, as well.
As far as the idea that “Obama haters” are “mistaken”…well, he’ll have to make a lot more “gestures” before he gets back to “even” for me.

  4. #3 is right. Any public trial will allow Israel a venue to prove bias and go after the Arabs for their real war crimes.

  5. No. 2: Is English your native language? If so, you never learned the difference between (i) spoken colloquialisms, which can be used only in face-to-face conversations, and (ii) written English, which must be used when two or more people are communicating to each other in writing.

I cannot answer your question because you do not know how to ask it in written English.

  6. nfgo,

I’m sorry my English is hard for you to understand, I guess my question doesn’t compute in your “logical” brain

I’ll try to rephrase it just for you

according to your second reasoning that “Obama hating supporters are mistaken” please explain in your best words how is it that Obama can cancel a shipment of arms to Israel yet at the same time approve it to Turkey, who has been anti Israel as of late

do I need to make myself clearer in order for an answer from you?

  7. Coffee: your English isn’t the problem. The real problem is that he lost the argument and has nothing else to get you on.

  8. To NO. 2: Sorry to keep you waiting. I think I now know that you are referring to a recent cancellation of a shipment or missles that the US had agreed to provide to Israel. The cancellation was ordered in the last few weeks.

Here is how explain the cancellation: America is not Israel’s fairy godmother. There are many things that America does to support Israel, and some things it does not do. Moreover, there are even things – like US demands that Israel stop expanding settlements – that are contrary to the present government’s policy but are actually in Israel’s best interest and are supported by the bulk of the non-settler Israeli population. As for the recent cancellation of a US arms shipment, I do not believe it has materially weakened Israel or its defenses, and it may have strengthened the US relationship with other governments neighboring Israel, which relationsips are valuable to and supportive of Israel.

Egypt has been at peace with Israel since the last days of the Carter administration, and that has been a valuable contribution to Israel’s security. Keeping favorable relationships between the US and Egypt is beneficial to Israel, and Israel continues to be well-armed and well financed, even if the US does not jump through every hoop that the current Israeli government holds up. Some Israeli supporters – such as you, evidently – are insufficiently familiar with the tightrope that the US must walk to support Israel, and every US action which is inconsistent with Israeli government demands is not per se adverse to Israel.
