Deputy Minister Ben-Dahan Targeting No-Show Rabbonim

bdaA law backed by Chief Rabbi Dovid Lau Shlita intending to restore confidence in the nation’s rabbinical system passed in Knesset in a 54-11 vote. As a result, Deputy Minister of Religious Services Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan is empowered to dismiss a civil service rav of a city if it is determined that person is no longer fulfilling the requirements of the post.

An argument erupted during the vote between Ben-Dahan and Shas faction members. Rabbi Ben-Dahan used his time at the podium to respond to Shas, questioning their outrage over the bill. He shouted at Shas that “for 11 years under your watch there was a minimum of Torah”, accusing Shas of abusing the system while he has appointed 69 rabbonim in communities throughout Yehuda and Shomron.

According to the new law, Rabbi Ben-Dahan may summon a rav suspected of failing to perform his duties to a board of inquiry and that forum will have the right to dismiss the rav from that civil service post.

  1. avreimi; if making someone do the job they are paid to do sounds to you “like a power hungry control freak” you need to have your hearing check.

Taking a salary and NOT showing up and doing your job SOUNDS Sto me like geneiva. Is gewneiva ok since it is a “Rov” doing it?
