The White House says the controversy over a Republican operative who criticized President Barack Obama’s daughters is a reminder of the importance of carefully choosing one’s words.
Elizabeth Lauten was the communications director to Rep. Stephen Fincher of Tennessee. She resigned Monday after a backlash over her Facebook post claiming the daughters should have shown more “class” at a turkey-pardoning ceremony.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest says he was surprised a congressional staffer would use a Thanksgiving-themed event to criticize the first family. He says individuals who frequently speak publicly tend to be mindful of how their words are perceived.
Lauten had urged the Obama girls to “dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar.” Earnest says it’s common sense that first daughters should be off-limits to criticism.

She was right! Did you see the pics? Where did they get those dresses, and those shoes?..awful. And that hair!!……
Funny to hear that coming from the Left that mocked Sarah Palin’s kids. When people were upset, they said, “it’s Sarah Palin for goodness sake”. And it was a thousand times worse what they said, and, she wasn’t in office. Just running. They made their bed, now they get to lay in it. The girls looked awful, just like the rest of those bafoons. You can’t teach people class, and these people have no class what so ever. Incredible low lifes.
I agree with the premise, but I also believe that it should work the same no matter who is in the White House. When Bush’s daughters were attacked, that was ok. The people doing it didn’t resign. It’s a bit hypocritical.
If the President decides to include his family in official events, they should not be considered off-limits to criticism.
Their clothing choices were horrendous and could have been overruled – not sure why they weren’t except I suspect he parents are into letting the girls exercise teenage autonomy. But as for their reaction. Please! They were in my mind doing their best during a totally painful ceremony. They are no doubt thinking, “This is beyond boring, it’s idiotic. I wanted to be skiing in Switzerland and now I am the total laughingstock of my entire school. Let’s get outta here at the first chance we get.” I can’t say I blame them, LOL.
Presidents (no matter how idiotic) and their families should be held to a higher standard. If they can’t handle it, maybe they shouldn’t be there.
I saw a still photo of the president and his daughters at the media event known as the “pardoning of the Thanksgiving turkey.” Since YWN did not post the photo – and there is good reason why YWN would not, as the girls do not observe tznius – I presume that commenters 1-3 and 5-6 did see a photo somewhere else.
Their attire and posture was perfectly acceptable among the majority of American gentiles (and most non-frum Jews). From the still photo I saw, I have no idea how anyone could determine that there was any lack of class or any other problem with the president’s daughters from a still photograph. The simple fact is that a lot of people don’t like the president, and naturally, they don’t like his family either.
Does anyone remember what Rush Limbaugh called Chelsea Clinton when her dad was president?
As for Sarah Palin’s family, part of her candidacy was based on the “family values” nonsense that the Republicans were peddling, and abstinance as a form of teenage birth control. Ms. Palin made her family an issue, and – oops – that abstinence thing did not work very well for Ms. Palin’s oldest daughter.
