Ramapo Police Issue Alert About IRS Scam


scamnThe Town of Ramapo Police Department would like to remind residents to be aware of telephone scams during which the caller purports to be an agent with the Internal Revenue Service or other entity and attempts to gain money from the victim.

In the latest such incident that was reported to the Ramapo Police, the caller warned the victim that she would be arrested unless she purchased prepaid debit cards and relayed the card numbers to the caller. As a result, the victim suffered a loss of several thousand dollars. The name of the victim is being withheld.

If any resident receives a call of this type, they are asked to contact the Town of Ramapo Police Department.

  1. Thanks to YW’s publicising these scams, I was alert enough to notice a similar scam. I got a call from “Con Edison” who was promising to lower my payments but I needed to give him my account number. I told him I didnt have it in front of me, he said he would wait on the line till I got it. At that point I got suspicious and told him to have a good day and that he probably wasnt Con Edison, and hung up.
