NY Governor Touts Plan To Reform Police-Community Relations

egGov. Andrew Cuomo is announcing plans to improve police officer safety and combat police misconduct.

Cuomo said Wednesday in his State of the State address that he’ll convene a statewide commission on police-community relations.

He called for the recruitment of more minorities in law enforcement.

Cuomo said he’d allow district attorneys to release reports on grand juries that do not indict officers in fatal encounters.

He said he could call for a special prosecutor for cases in which police kill a civilian

Cuomo wants more protection — including bulletproof vests and body cameras — for officers.

He’s acting at a time of renewed focus on policing.

Protests swept the city after Eric Garner was placed in a fatal chokehold. Last month, two police officers were killed in an ambush.
