Israel’s Black Panther Founder Charlie Biton Backs Shas

shasDespite having harsh criticism of the party in the past, the founder of the Israeli Black Panthers party, former MK Charlie Biton, has come out in support of Shas in the 20th Knesset elections. Biton served as a Hadash party MK and in the past met with Yasser Arafat YM”S. Following his Knesset career, Biton accused Shas of stifling the development of the Sephardim in Israel.

Biton believes that “only Deri” will look out for the Sephardim, adding that today, discrimination against Sephardim still exists.

After the Second Intifada Biton abandoned his left-wing orientation and accused Arafat of deceiving him.

Interestingly, earlier in the election campaign Biton announced he backs the Kulanu party headed by Moshe Kahlon but has not come out loud and clear in favor of Aryeh Deri and Shas.

  1. 1. He has been out of politics for many years. His movement collapsed when Shas entered politics.

    2. Has he become Shomer Shabbos in the interim?

    3. If he is a Sefardi “dove”, Shas is the best he’ll find. All other parties aiming for ethnocentric Sefardi voters are very hawkish.
