Likud Negotiators to Shas Leader: Internalize the Election Results

deriShas’ latest demand is that MK Yitzchak Vaknin be appointed as one of the deputy Knesset speakers in the 20th Knesset. Leaders of the Likud negotiating team told Shas leader Aryeh Deri it is time to “internalize the result of the elections, to realize the party dropped from 11 to 7 seats”, signaling there is a limit to what Shas may demand.

Likud turned down the request, basically explaining to Deri that it is time to get real and realize just what he is entitled to. Likud officials Haaretz reports compared Shas exaggerated demands with that of the Bayit Yehudi party, which entered the elections with 12 seats and now only has 8 seats in the 20th Knesset.

At this point and time, it also appears Deri will not be heading the Interior Ministry as he indicated would be the case.

  1. If Deri truly cared about representing his constituency, he would be working to get the Ministry of Religious Affairs, to the exclusion of all else.

  2. Likud has finally gotten around to telling the little parties that lost a large number of votes that since they are little, they can expect little pieces of patronage.

  3. If Deri had accommodated Eli Yishai’s requests, he would have been in far stronger bargaining position.

The way he ignored Yishai, is the way now Deri is now being ignored by Likud, getting dosage of his own medicine.
