Top Senator: Domestic Surveillance Needs to Be Ramped Up

spyThe chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee says he is shocked at how little information the National Security Agency is collecting through American phone records. He says the American public should be less worried about privacy and should back increased collection as a means of foiling terrorist attacks.

Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee said Wednesday that “it’s beyond belief how little data is a part of the program.”

House leaders have reached a bipartisan compromise on a bill that seeks to codify President Barack Obama’s proposal to end the NSA’s collection of domestic calling records, but it would allow the agency to request certain phone records under a court order.

Senate leaders have introduced a bill that would allow the NSA to continue collecting phone records.

  1. As counter-intuitive as it seems, the GOP is much more into big government than the Democrats. Corker is one example. The Patriot Act is another. But the numbers (from Market Watch/Dow Jones) really tell the story.

Federal spending has gone up less under President Obama than any president since Eisenhower. First term Obama had a 1.4% increase of federal spending.

    Bush I had a 5.4% increase.
    “W’s” increases were in the 7% – 8 % range.
Clinton’s two term had a growth of spending in the 3’s.
    Reagan’s second term … 4.9%

    Reagan’s first term was a 8.7% increase.

So, which party is the small government party?

  2. It’s all these Libertarian supporters who are so obsessed with “freedom” that they forget about security.
True, we all want our privacy but with terrorists lurking around your corner one has to make some compromises.
They should find better means to analyze the data and not just collect.
As well, they should have rules that restrict it’s use for other purposes.
Senator Corker is right, in this case, and I just wish he would have stuck to his guns about the 1st bill for Congress inspection of the Iran deal.
