Hikind Thanks DMV For Giving Motorists With Smartphones Electronic Insurance Proof Option

insAssemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) thanked the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles for now allowing motorists with smartphones or other portable electronic devices to provide proof of insurance coverage to law enforcement or as otherwise needed. Assemblyman Hikind first proposed this amendment to New York State’s vehicle and traffic law in 2013 and has been building support for the change.

“I’m grateful that the Department of Motor Vehicles has adopted this regulation, which I sought to enact legislatively,” said Hikind. “No one looks forward to getting pulled over by a policeman for any reason. But even routine matters are often compounded by the inability to produce valid documents. This new way of presenting insurance documents will ease the minds of New York motorists who already use smartphones and similar electronic devices in their daily routines. While it’s sometimes difficult to find paperwork that you haven’t looked for in six months, the cell phone, for those who rely on it, is usually within reach. Electronic copies of insurance documents will also be the most current. I am delighted that this option, which I fought for, is now available.”

Assemblyman Hikind thanked acting DMV Commissioner Gregory Kline for adopting the new regulation. He also thanked NYS State Senator Simcha Felder who sponsored the bill in the Senate where the bill passed twice.
