Rishon L’tzion Rabbi Yosef: First a Jewish State, Then Democratic


yyoRishon L’tzion Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef Shlita was a guest in the Knesset shul and spoke to a number of Members of Knesset. The rav explained that first and foremost, Israel is a Jewish state and then democratic.

The rav visited the Knesset on Tuesday, 9 Shevat on the Knesset’s 50th anniversary in the Givat Ram facility.

Among those taking part in the event were Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem Rabbi Aryeh Stern Shlita, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, Knesset Officer Yosef Greif and MKs.

Rav Yosef turned to lawmakers, explaining to them that first and foremost they must preserve the Jewish character of the nation and to do everything possible to accomplish this.

  1. The Headline makes it seem like the Rabbi said as a statement that the state is first and foremost Jewish and only then democratic. The article sounds more like the Rabbi said it as a plea that this is the way he thinks it should be.

    Either way it is very wishful. The only way a state can be considered Jewish is if totally and fully adheres to the precepts of the Torah. No Rabbi in the world can dispute this basic fact. A Torah state is not meant to be established until the time of our redemption.
