The Jewish Defense League is considered to be a violent, racist, and extremist far-right political group founded by Rabbi Meir Kahane in the United States.�In 2001, the FBI declared the JDL to be a �violent, right-wing terrorist group.�
The JDL has been inactive for years, but Meir Weinstein, JDL leader from Toronto, said he would be setting up �a branch�combat the rise of �radical Islam� in Quebec.
Rabbi Reuben Poupko of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) said, �There is no need for a Jewish self-defense group in Montreal.�
In August, after incidents�of anti-Semitic vandalism in Montreal, Weinstein organized a meeting to gauge interest in reviving the JDL after years of�inactivity.�50 people are reported to have attended that meeting.
Rabbi Poupko claims that local authorities have and are capable of successfully dealing with anti-Semitic incidents and the JDL�s work is unnecessary.
