Chosson And Kallah Argue and Wedding Ends Before the New Life Begins

chupAccording to attorney David Rozen during his comments to Kol Chai Radio on Tuesday morning 14 Adar-I, this story is as true as it is bizarre and sad. The story involves the ending of a marriage hours after the chupah due to concerns by the kallah regarding ‘ayin hora’.

The kesuva was ready and the sum included in it was NIS180,000. For reasons only the kallah knows, something to do with ‘ayin hora’, she insisted the amount must be changed to NIS 555,000.

At this stage we add that former Jerusalem Religious Council posek HaGaon HaRav Eliyahu Schlesinger Shlita told Kol Chai’s Mordechai Lavi “this is why I insist the chosson and kallah meet with me prior to the chupah”. Rav Schlesinger explained that he details the meaning of the kesuva to the couple, as well as the amount, and these matters are agreed to and closed long before the chupah. Sadly, in this case, the matter was discussed shortly before the chupah, a bad mistake.

Rozen explains that when the sums were mentioned the chosson retorted he is only willing to pay NIS 3,000. The kallah was insulted but ultimately, there was a chupah but the chosson made it clear he was not interested in marrying her.

Rozen then confirms the chosson left, and he was not present at Shabbos sheva brachos, another discussion in its own right. The couple then appeared at the Rabbanut and asked to be divorced. The kallah is seeking NIS 500,000 and NIS 180,000 for the kesuva and damages.

Rabbi Schlesinger explained too many details are missing for a halachic ruling but the limited information does show possibly, such a case could be halachically a ‘mekach taus’, once again stating he cannot give a psak due to the lack of information.

The beis din told the couple they both incurred a loss and no one was going to receive money as they both lost and suffered.

  1. This is among the most bizarre and unfortunate stories. I agree with the B’D, they each should get $0. The biggest trouble they will both face is their “track record” for future matches.

  2. When the Yidden were in the midbour they did a terrible thing. They bowed down to the aigel hazhov. Today we bow down to aigel hayerek. Money greenbacks or shequels.Shame it had to come to that and thank the Rebono Shelolm there were no children involved.

  3. Why is this article even here? The guests who did not give a gift at the chassaneh are relieved. No mention of the parent involvement. Weird. More often than not it’s the parents who stir the pot, not the couple. This kallah sounds like she needs serious help.
