President Barack Obama is challenging Congress to reinstate the assault weapons ban and make it harder for terrorist to kill Americans.
Obama spoke Tuesday after meeting with his National Security Council. Democrat Hillary Clinton has called for a similar ban, while Republican Donald Trump is opposing reinstatement of the ban.
The shooter in the Orlando attack, Omar Mateen, used a military-style assault weapon to blast away at an Orlando nightclub, killing 49 people.
The ban on semi-automatic assault weapons that expired in 2004. The large majority of Republicans in Congress and some pro-gun Democrats have opposed reinstatement of the ban.

can anyone explain why semi-automatic assault weapons should not be banned. It is not a hunting gun, so who would need or want it – only killers! If I am wrong, correct me please.
And it didn’t help… Can you think the other way around Obama if some of the people would have a gun and kill the shooter how many people would be saved ??? The terrorist will always manage to have one but of course there Muslims so no one can have one to shoot them…
Izzyg- I think you are wrong. “Semi-automatic” means one squeeze of the trigger shoots one bullet. That’s a rifle or a pistol.
“Automatic” means like a machine gun. You squeeze the trigger and it shoots bullets as long as you hold the trigger.
So Semi-automatic weapons have reasonable uses. It’s automatic weapons that have been usdd in these mass murders, usually, and have no reasonable use that I know of to honest citizens.
Guns in the hands of the governed is the greatest deterrent to tyranny by the governing.
