NY Local Property Tax Cap Set At Less Than 1 Percent For 2017

taxNew York’s comptroller says local governments statewide face a tax cap of less than 1 percent next year, slightly lower than this year’s limit on property tax hikes.

Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says the latest calculation – 0.68 percent – applies to municipalities with fiscal years starting Jan. 1.

That includes all counties, towns, fire districts, 44 cities and 10 villages.

DiNapoli says Monday that will mean more limited budget options as fixed costs continue growing and “even tougher” financial choices next year.

The state tax cap, first applied in 2012, limits tax levy increases to the lesser of 2 percent or the inflation rate. Pension costs are exempt.

Municipal boards can vote to exceed the cap but require at least 60 percent approval.
