Verizon Looks To Upgrade Service Along Rt. 17 In Sullivan County

ctoThe problem of poor cell phone service along Route 17 in parts of Sullivan County, in particular in the Town of Thompson, could be a thing of the past.

Thompson Supervisor William Rieber said Verizon has given him a verbal commitment to explore ways of upgrading service to rid the system of dropped phone calls or no service at all. The company has its engineers looking at options at this time, he said.

“We have elicited feedback from the community itself and probably forwarded 100 different emails to Verizon with specific locations where we found problems with dropped calls and inadequate service,” Rieber said. “They are looking at all options including tower locations.”

The supervisor said since the world revolves around broadband, Internet and cell phone service, “We need to step up to the plate and get it done.”

  1. The engineers can determine in a single short afternoon exactly where the weak signal spots are. This part of the process is the easiest. Where to locate more towers is a potential issue. I hope the problem is resolved before next summer. It is quite serious when calls drop in the middle of a conversation repeatedly, and you never know when you can pick up another cell spot.
