Teens Plead Guilty To Scrawling Hate Symbols At Jewish Bungalow Colonies

The Times Herald Record reports:

Sullivan County Judge Frank LaBuda plans to sentence on Sept. 8 – Rosh Hashanah – the five teens accused of ransacking two Jewish bungalow colonies and scrawling hate symbols on the walls.

LaBuda has ordered the teens to prepare a history paper on the significance of Rosh Hashanah, when the Jewish New Year begins.

Daemion Cameron, 19, Malik Keith, 18, and Dishawn Terry, 16, pleaded guilty Thursday to third-degree burglary in the April 18 incident, where they admitted to breaking possessions and scrawling gang graffiti, a swastika and “Hitler” on walls of the bungalows.

LaBuda also said they will be required to read their essays on Rosh Hashanah to their victims. The plea bargain calls for six-month jail sentences, five years’ probation and restitution.

All the boys were residents of Abbott House, a home for troubled teens that was within walking distance from the bungalows, and have been in jail ever since their arrests. They are expected to be released in mid-August before their formal sentencing Sept. 8.

The boys were charged with rampaging through the Kaiman bungalow colony, but have since admitted to vandalizing a second Jewish colony across the road.

  1. This is a creatively-crafted sentence. It has a degree of punishment, but also education. And education is the only way to cure an ill like this.

Kudos to the judge his wisdom.

Aside from the letters, “[t]he plea bargain calls for six-month jail sentences, five years’ probation and restitution.”
