Security Council Votes for Increased Sanctions Against Iran

12 of the 15 nations of the United Nations Security Council voted to approve a fourth round of sanctions against Iran in today’s (Wednesday, June 9th) UN Security Council session. The session began at 10:00am local time. Turkey and Brazil opposed another round of sanctions, and Lebanon abstained.

While Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters in Ecuador on Tuesday the fourth round would be the most significant sanctions to date, the sanctions are not going to be the crippling sanctions that Israel would like to see, a move that may actually bring Tehran’s nuclear enrichment program to a halt.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently announced that if another round of sanctions was imposed on his country, it would end all dialogue towards reaching an understanding with his country regarding its nuclear program, which he insists is for medical and other non-military purposes, rejecting all accusations that Tehran intends to build a nuclear bomb.

While the vote is indeed a media event, and it will somewhat impact Iran’s already ailing economy, the “crippling sanctions” did not materialize and there will be no oil embargo, a move that would have brought the Islamic fundamentalist state to a halt.

The sanctions will however impact banking for Iran, as well as the purchase of heavy military armaments. US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice praised the move, applauding the council for standing up to its responsibilities.

Turkish Ambassador to the UN, Ertugrul Apakan, expressed fears that the sanctions will have a negative impact on the region.

  1. People will undoubtedly look back at this moment in history and wonder, when Ahmadinejad points nuclear missiles at Israel and the U.S, how we could have been so dumb as to sit by and only impose “sanctions” on Iran.
