CBS 2 HD has learned hundreds of people could have been killed if the bomb used in the Times Square plot had worked properly.

The findings stem from chilling tests done by the FBI.

The blast would’ve sent a shock wave down 44th Street and out into Times Square. The crowded street would’ve become a killing zone. Accounts of the bomb test CBS 2 HD received Tuesday paint a grim picture of what the Times Square bomber could’ve done to New York City.

Faisal Shahzad apparently didn’t follow his bomb-making instructions well enough to build a device that worked. However, federal investigators have concluded that the design of the car bomb he tried to use in May was sound and had he followed instructions to the letter, his propane, gasoline and fertilizer device would’ve killed and injured hundreds of people.

Federal authorities have, in fact, detonated several mock-ups of the Times Square bomb in Pennsylvania based on the instructions Shahzad received in Pakistan and have concluded:

The bomb would’ve destroyed the SUV carrying the explosives directly affecting as many as 1,200 people, killing between 200 and 250 on the street.

The deaths would’ve been pedestrians in Times Square or moving along 44th Street.

CBS 2 HD has been told no structural damage would’ve resulted, but the tall Manhattan buildings would’ve amplified the bomb’s effect at street level, killing some people on the opposite side of Times Square and throwing debris out onto Eighth Avenue.

The bottom line is the bomb design was functional, but Shahzad used the wrong material in almost every instance except for the gasoline cans, but even they did not explode.
