New York, NY – Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly presided over the NYPDs annual High Holiday security briefing at One Police Plaza Tuesday.
As it has every year since 9/11, the NYPD will increase security to protect New Yorks Jewish community on Rosh Hashanah, which starts at sundown on Wednesday, Sept. 8, and Yom Kippur, beginning at sundown on Friday, Sept. 10.
While we have no specific threats against New York City currently, every year at this time we increase patrols in certain areas with large populations of Jewish people as well as synagogues and other Jewish houses of worship, Kelly said.
Some synagogues throughout the city will receive unannounced visits from the NYPDs Hercules units, which consist of heavily armed counter-terrorism officers, the commissioner added.
Commissioner Kelly asked that members of the Jewish community be the NYPDs eyes and ears during this years High Holiday season.
We must do everything we can to protect Jewish institutions, which, along with New York City, are enduring targets of terrorism, Kelly said.
