Shelly Silver Rips Tolls, Bridge Hikes

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver ripped a plan to hike Hudson River bridge and tunnel tolls-but expects the increases won’t be as bad as proposed.

“If tradition holds up, whatever increase (is approved) won’t be as large as requested,” Silver said.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has proposed hiking the tolls to enter the city by the George Washington Bridge and the Holland and Lincoln tunnels to $15 next month, up from $8.

“It’s unfortunate for people who have to commute to work and things like that,” Silver said. “It’s a bad time to be doing it, I just don’t really understand the logic and the timing of such a huge increase.”

But Silver said there is little the Legislature can do since it has no real oversight of the PA. The PA is under the domain “exclusively” of Gov. Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, he noted.

Tradition did not prevent the passing of Toeiva “marriage” laws in New York, so I wouldn’t get your hopes up, Mr. Silver!
