Rep. Towns’ Statement in Honor of Jewish American Heritage Month

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – U.S. Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) today issued the following statement in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month:

“Jewish American Heritage Month is a celebration of Jewish Americans and their remarkable history in the United States. This month we recognize the contributions of Jewish Americans who have enriched American culture and shaped life in this country for more than three centuries.

“The United States is home to generations of Jewish people – who came to escape persecution from all parts of the world. They came to rebuild their communities in a land that promises freedom and embraces religious liberty, as defined by the U.S. Constitution.

“Throughout the last century, many Jewish Americans, including survivors of the Holocaust, made their way to major parts of the 10th District to rebuild their lives. In our community, they came to find refuge and continue to grow their community based on their faith and heritage. Many also came to Brooklyn in the past century to seek new opportunities and pursue their dreams. I proudly represent a large Jewish community in Brooklyn, which, as a borough, constitutes the largest population of Jews worldwide outside of Israel. Our thriving Jewish American community is an integral component of Brooklyn’s history and diverse identity.

“Jewish Americans have achieved tremendous success in all parts of American culture and society. Their pursuits have not only changed the course of American history but have strengthened this nation in countless ways.

“In honor of Jewish American Heritage Month, let us celebrate the rich history of Jewish life in our nation. I join all Brooklynites in proudly paying tribute to the accomplishments of our Jewish American community here in the 10th District and of all Jewish Americans across the country.”
