Kadima leader and Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz may soon find himself leading the opposition once again as he signals he may break from the coalition government. Mofaz announced that he will not meet with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu prior to the Plesner Committee’s announcement defining its recommendation for the nation’s new draft law. Mofaz explains “it’s not personal – there simply is nothing to be gained by meeting with the prime minister at present”.
Even amid the brisk pace of events in the Israeli political arena, the transition from chareidi draft to a coalition crisis and possible general elections came at an amazing pace since Mofaz only entered the coalition a few short weeks ago.
Mofaz has signaled that if Mr. Netanyahu does not announce his acceptance of the Plesner plan, he will be left with no alternative other than to break away from the coalition just weeks after entering into his post.
Not wasting any time, the Labor party is preparing a motion to dissolve the Knesset with party leaders explaining that it is now clear that general elections are inevitable. If Labor does present such a bill in plenum, it is likely that Kadima will support the move.

Maybe elections wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Its increasingly clear there is no concensus on how to implement the decision to end Chareidi draft exemptions and that an election could provide a new government with a mandate to move ahead or continue the status quo. If there is a large majority for requiring universal service for everyone, the Chareidi MKs will have no choice but to live with the outcome of the elections.
