22 Chareidim Arrested In Police Sweep Into Money Laundering Case

Police on Wednesday morning, 4 Kislev, raided the homes of the heads of a NGO in Yerushalayim, confiscating documents and checks while making over twenty arrests.

The investigation began several months ago, when a complaint was filed with the police by the Ministry of Education’s enforcement department, according to which it is suspected that the Ministry of Education funds intended for educational institutions, including midrashot and ulpanot, have not reached their destination.

Upon receipt of the complaint, the investigators of the Israel Police Central Unit opened a covert investigation, in which evidence and other findings were collected using advanced technological means.

Police moved from clandestine to the open stage on Wednesday morning as detectives raided the homes of the two directors of the organization in Jerusalem, where computers, documents and dozens of checks were confiscated, amounting to tens of thousands of shekels. At the same time, additional police forces arrested and detained 20 other suspects on suspicion of being accomplices and receiving the money.

The suspects were brought to the Central Unit in Jerusalem, where they were interrogated on the charges mentioned.

According to the investigation, the association’s managers formed a link between various educational frameworks and the Ministry of Education, and received funds intended for their transfer to educational frameworks, which are intended, inter alia, to serve as educational scholarships for the students. According to suspicions, the funds did not arrive at their destination, but the suspect was suspected of having taken part in the activities of the yeshiva students.
