Rav Amar Uses His Weekly Shiur To Explain Why There Have Been Earthquakes

Jerusalem Chief Sephardi Rav, HaGaon HaRav Moshe Shlomo Amar, used his weekly shiur to speak about the many earthquakes and tremors felt in northern Israel over recent weeks. The rav explained, “HKBH is using the earthquakes to arouse Am Yisrael”.

“This is HKBH who is shaking us, shocking us to wake up as He sees that we are not waking up.”

“Why are we waiting, God forbid?” Rav Amar asked, adding, “We will wake up and return to God!” “Our paths were searched and researched and returned to God.” נתעורר ונשוב אל ה’!, ‘נחפשה דרכינו ונחקרה ונשובה עד ה

Last week, Defense Ministry Avigdor Lieberman held a special emergency consultation following dozens of earthquakes and sub-tremors that hit northern Israel. Defense Minister Lieberman spoke of the earthquakes, which are also under the responsibility of his ministry, and said: “We have forgotten some of the history of Israel, and last June we conducted the largest earthquake exercise in the State of Israel.

“Following this, the Homefront Command has formulated a multi-year plan for coping and readiness of the Israeli homefront for both a security emergency and earthquakes, and after we formulated the multi-year plan, it was submitted to the cabinet for approval. The same meeting that will approve a plan to deal with earthquakes and improve the preparedness of the home front,” Lieberman added.

  1. P.S. This is an active seismic zone that spans several countries, not just EY. The Rav’s rationale is interesting, especially around rosh chodesh Av, but the civil authorities should keep their attention on emergency preparedness since earthquakes could come at any time of year and don’t always take account of the state of tshuvah of the tzibur.

  2. the key is what each of us will correct in ourselves as a result not what fault we might attribute to others. rabbis who blame others violate – ki lo machshevosai machishevosaichem, lowering HKBH to the level of an individual.

  3. Hillul Shabbos, gay parades, men and women mixing in units in the IDF and reformers at the Kotel are some of the reasons.

  4. Dr Yidd, the earthquakes are not random to those who have emunah in Hashem.
Also, they are not a reward. So they are a warning.

“P.S. This is an active seismic zone”

I want to comment to what you’ve said, but before I do, in case I read anything into it that you didn’t actually intend, would you mind just clarifying without any mashmaos please…

  6. I dont need a chief Rabbi to tellme that the rebbono shel olam brings earthquakes. We say that in the davening daily. Let me hear why the rebbono shel olam brought earthquakes as opposed to flooding, extreme heat, drought, etc.
