A Very Special Bar Mitzvah Celebration in Sderot

metzger1.jpgBy all accounts, the bar mitzvah celebration in Sderot on Sunday (March 16th) was not your ordinary event.

The Israel Air Force on Sunday dispatched hundreds of officers and enlisted personnel in a solidarity effort, bringing a new life to the rocket-struck city for the day.

Officers and soldiers alike were out in the streets, doing their part to assist the residents of the city whom have been targeted by Hamas rockets for some seven years, with recent months being accompanied by a sharp increase in the warfare.

Some accompanied the elderly to their homes, painting and carrying out minor repairs while other military personnel were found in playgroups, parks and kindergartens, bringing joy to the children.

Perhaps the height of the day was the bar mitzvah of some 50 area residents, highlighted by the participation of Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger, who commented that this was indeed an extraordinary event for the youths of the city.

Also attending the bar mitzvah was Yehuda Meshi-Zahav, the head of the ZAKA rescue and recovery organization.

Rabbi Metzger in his address had words of praise for the air force personnel, calling them the “painters and contractors,” as he brought a side of humor to the event. He then turned to the bar mitzvah boys instructing them to take an example from the day’s events, advising them that when they are older, to seek to “be among the givers in life”.

  1. It is absurd that this has become an acceptable way of daily life. Rockets cannot be tolerated flying into populated cities. Wipe out all those responsible for sending the rockets and let it be over already instead of accepting it as a daily exercise!
