Passengers Furious Over Numerous El Al Flight Cancelations & Delays on Thursday

Beginning on Thursday morning, 25 Tishrei, there were numerous delays to different destinations for El Al passengers in Ben-Gurion Airport, including international flights to New York, Prague, Paris and Rome.

According to a Ladaat News report, it appears, the delays stem from, among other things, a severe shortage of cabin staff and assistant pilots who refuse to report to work due to a dispute.

El Al responded with the following statement: Due to operational reasons, there are delays in the number of El Al flights. The company is doing all it can to have the flights operate as soon as possible. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to our customers.

  1. Just a reminder to passengers delayed that you may have rights to financial compensation. If your flight to a European Union destination [Prague, Rome, Paris for example] has been cancelled or delayed you have the right to compensation under European law. Under EU Regulation 261/2004, passengers are entitled to up to €600 [$690] in compensation when their flight is delayed and lands at its destination more than three hours late. The Israeli Aviation Services Law 2012 also gives benefits but is a more complex scheme where financial compensation only becomes due after an 8 hour delay but like the EU scheme there are ground service benefits due, free food etc. for much shorter delays. In some circumstances the Israeli scheme gives more and most importantly it applies to all flights out of Israel, New York, Miami, Toronto, Boston, the Far East for example, not just EU destination flights. El Al is a terrible airline with largely old equipment that shows very little regard for its customers either on the ground or in the air. Fly them if you feel you must [I sometimes do on shorter flights when their schedule best fits mine] but make sure you get every $ due to you when they mess up!
