New App Assists Palestinians In Bypassing IDF Checkpoints

How to get from Ramallah to Shechem without passing through an IDF checkpoint? Palestinian drivers who are tired of being detained at the many checkpoints throughout Yehuda and Shomron in order to make it more difficult to carry out terrorist attacks, have developed a new app that helps them evade the checkpoints, just as WAZE does, or at least tries, to warn against police.

“We had to plan out maps completely from scratch. The wall, checkpoints, the settlements. Existing mapping software could not address the complexities here,” says Mohamed Abdel Halim, developer of Doroob Navigator, to Maariv. In his words, “Other applications may say that the only way to travel between certain Palestinian cities is to cut through settlements”.

He explains they are trying to change this, and the application is not only helpful for areas in the PA, but also for residents of Gaza, admitting most users are residents of the “West Bank”. The funding comes from a Ramallah company, and Halim hopes to earn a livelihood from his app in the future.
