Bnei Brak: 2 Chareidim Arrested for Illegally Manufacturing & Selling Medications

Police arrested two elderly chareidi residents of Bnei Brak for manufacturing medications without a license as well as selling them, items authorities label as being dangerous to the public.

The operation took place on Wednesday, with police working with inspectors of the Ministry of Health and the Tax Authority. The suspects in custody are 70 and 78-years-old, working in an apartment to manufacture medications and home remedies.

A large quantity of ointments and capsules intended for sale were seized. Police and inspectors report the items being sold pose a hazard to the public.

In addition, tens of thousands of shekels and thousands of dollars were seized. The cash was hidden in the apartment. It is surmised the cash was the result of profits earned in sales of the medications, money that was not reported to the Tax Authority.

The suspects were arraigned in the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. The police investigation is ongoing.

  1. YWN be fair in your reporting ; they were producing ” alternative homeopathic type stuff and making their own concoctions for years they were NOT selling illegal pills. it seems that many in e”y buy into these alternative healing route and this older couple has been running this little shop for many years almost like a mom pop health food store the problem was that they need some kind of paperwork- permit and people were taking this stuff for real medical conditions that needed a doctor not shemen zayis mixed w herbs
fix your headline to be more accurate

  2. In EY, most of these so called “homeopathic” medications DO require government approval in contrast to the U.S. where the FDA has limited regulatory authority over most of these “natural” or “herbal” remedies (if properly labeled. If this couple are legitimately engaged in such non-prescription type productions of concoctions for which they claim any healing qualities , they still need government approval so its unclear how they have operated for years w/o obtaining the needed approvals. The fact that they operate out of an apartment doesn’t relieve them of the obligation to obtain approvals, IF they are subject to regulation. Obviously, it is their responsibility to know the rules. If you are correct and all they are doing is mixing olive oil and herbs, than most likely the charges will be withdrawn.

  3. Kol hakovod to the people producing these “alternative medicine” creams. They heal scars and can prevent surgery after burns.

Unfortunately, here in the US the government has also clamped down on individuals administering these creams. It’s an indidual’s right to choose what kind of medicinal route they choose to go on and it’s an individual’s right to produce these alternative medicine as well. Everyone who uses these creams ( don’t know about the pills but I assume it’s the same thing) knows they are not prescribed by a doctor and taken at their own risk ( as is prescribed medicine taken at one’s own risk…).

The medical field has saved countless lives, but so has the alternative medical field.

  4. Two issues here: first, some home “remedies” are not remedies at all, but contain dangerous substances such as mercury or plants which are poisonous. Some, such as those derived from foxglove, are actual medicines (like digitalis) but precisely because of that they need to given by a doctor, otherwise overdose or drug interaction problems can happen.

Second: “…the cash was the result of profits earned in sales of the medications, money that was not reported to the Tax Authority.” There is also a question of tax evasion here. Evidently their business was “off the books,” and they were breaking the law by not paying taxes.

Sad for an older couple be in such a situation, but unfortunately cheating “the government” isn’t seen as a crime by some people (and not just in EY).

  5. I agree with Meir G.
The main line in this article is “The Tax Authority ”
That tells you what the real issue is.
    Not “illegally manufacturing medications”

  6. It’s about time. Lives can be saved as a result. People are so crazy and convinced RL of these alternative methods. I was buying iron in the health food store and a young woman walked in asking for “something that would prevent the flu, like vitamin C”. I hope they would not sell her anything, and send her for the vaccine. The authorities should crack down more and more. How about the parents of children being treated with Reflexology instead of Chemotherapy? They, too, should be arrested.
