Der Spiegel: Germany Prepares Master Plan for Prisoner Exchange

pp.jpgAccording to the Der Spiegel Magazine, Germany has forged a master plan for a prisoner exchange deal between Hizbullah and Israel. The official proposal is on the table and Jerusalem must make a decision.

The report adds that a German intelligence agent has been shuttling back and forth for some two years on behalf of the United Nations in the hope of securing a deal and last week, a breakthrough did occur.

The master plan calls for the return of soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, both believed dead, in exchange for Israel’s release of the last four Lebanese fighters in custody.

Der Spiegel adds that while Hizbullah negotiator Hajj Wafik never confirmed the soldiers are dead, it is now an understood fact of the negotiations.

The master plan is a bold optimistic step also calls upon Israel to release “several dozen Palestinian prisoners”. Germany is skeptical however, realizing such a move would place Hizbullah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah in a very good position as the negotiator for all prisoners.

There are also complications on the Palestinian Authority front, where demands towards the release of IDF Corporal Gilad Shalit involve Israel’s release of 450 terrorists.

Speaking on Monday to the father of Ron Moshiach, one of the soldiers who fell in the line of duty during the Second Lebanon War, he stated that if his son’s body was still in Lebanon today, he personally would not request the government trade a single person for his body.

In a related matter, air force officers on Monday visited the Moshiach’s Cholon home to present them with their son’s identity tags, bringing somewhat of a closing to this painful chapter in their lives. The identity tag was contained in the box of body parts given over to Israel on Monday by Hizbullah via International Red Cross representatives.
