Thanks To Gafni & Smotrich: Significant Cut In Yeshivah Budget Thwarted

Finance Minister Betzalel Smotrich and chairman of the Knesset’s Finance Committee Moshe Gafni prevented a very significant cut in the yeshivah budget for the month of December.

For the past week, the transfer of December’s yeshiva budget was delayed due to differences of opinion between the Education and Finance Ministries, with the threat of a drastic cut in the budget hovering in the background.

The threat was the result of the elections that led to the fact that the state budget for the coming year has not yet been approved, which means that the government is operating on limited funds. Additionally, only 60% of the yeshivah budget is included in the budget base, with the remainder dependent on coalition funds.

The situation almost caused the yeshivah budget for December to be cut by about 50%, a potential financial crisis for yeshivos and avreichim.

Instead, Smotrich and Gafni informed the yeshivos on Tuesday evening that they successfully thwarted the budget cut and the funds will be transferred to yeshivos and avreichim in the coming hours.
