HEAD-SCRATCHER: Biden Says Airstrikes On Houthis Not Working, But They’ll Continue

President Joe Biden provided a rather unconventional response when questioned about the efficacy of strikes against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels and their impact on curbing attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

During a press briefing at the White House prior to his departure for a speech in North Carolina, the commander-in-chief acknowledged that the military strikes conducted by American and British forces have not achieved the desired outcome but confirmed that they will continue.

The rationale behind the U.S. military’s engagement in these strikes stems from the Houthi rebels’ targeting of American positions in the region with long-range missiles and their threats to disrupt the crucial shipping route in the Red Sea. Over the past week, the U.S. and its allies have carried out three rounds of attacks against the Houthis in Yemen in an attempt to deter further hostile actions.

Responding to a reporter’s inquiry on the south lawn regarding the effectiveness of the airstrikes in Yemen, President Biden remarked on Thursday, “When you say working, are they stopping the Houthis, no. Are they going to continue, yes.”

The recent strikes on the Houthis featured the launch of 14 missiles from submarines and U.S. Navy warships located in the Red Sea. This action followed the U.S. decision to reclassify the Houthis as a global terrorist organization and reinstate sanctions aimed at undermining the group’s financial operations.

President Biden’s response comes in the midst of criticism from a bipartisan group of lawmakers, including progressive Democrats, who have voiced concerns about the administration’s failure to seek Congressional approval prior to initiating military strikes in Yemen.

  1. Identify is a bozo, but he actually spoke the truth. These strikes do nothing. Leveling a few city blocks in Yemens one major city might do the trick

  2. Biden Administration weakly categorized the Houthis as a “specially designated global terrorist” (SDGT) group — which does not generate meaningful sanctions. It should have designated them as a “foreign terrorist organization” (FTO), a strong classification that does generate meaningful sanctions. The Trump Administration did designate them as an FTO, but the Biden Administration foolishly, weakly, and stupidly removed that classification and only now adds the weak SDGT classification to them. I hope that in November, we elect an Administration that is more pro-American and pro-Israel than the weak group we are unfortunately stuck with in the interim.
